The 70-210mm lens is a multi-purpose lens. This is one of the most versatile lenses - good for distant subjects and excellent for close-ups, sporting events, landscapes and portraits. You can shoot from as close as 3 feet or from long distances, under just about any average light conditions. This lens can take the place of three or four fixed-focal length lenses, making it an economical lens to own. With a little bit of creativity, this lens can produce images possible only with a zoom lens.

This photo shows the Olympus OM mount for open-aperture metering. This photo shows the one-touch Zoom/Focus ring and the focal length scale along with infra-red index. The calibration on the lens barrel shows the focal length for any zooming position, (but this need not be consulted because optimum picture composition and area can be easily determined through the viewfinder). Zoom Action & Close-Up
The focus can be adjusted separately from the zooming action. Just turn the ring to focus, and slide the ring to zoom. One ring controls both actions. 1:1 Close-ups from 3 feet using Macro Setting (left photo)
Once focused, the zoom lens maintains the focus setting even while zooming. It is a good practice to focus at the maximum focal length, i.e. with the largest possible image, and then zoom back to the desired field of view. This ensures maximum focus accuracy. (Photo left shows 210mm setting, lens is perfectly clear - background is magnified in photo, Photo Right shows 70mm setting)
