I am using lenses in
the range of 300mm,
400mm,
500mm and
800mm. I have
noticed that they balance pretty well on the arca-swiss lens
foot and tripod but there is still some movement. This
device creates a triangular wedge that prevents the lens and
camera from moving. This improves the clarity of
images made with these lenses!
Let's start with the
tripod. I wanted to make it easy to attach and remove
the lenses, so I got some lens plates and a quick release
for the tripod. The quick release goes onto the tripod
and stays there. I choose this one because it matches
the shape of the tripod head.
The lens plates go into
the lens collar mounts for each of the lenses and stay
there. Then, when a lens is to be attached to the
tripod, the quick release knob is unscrewed, the lens placed
in the groove, and the knob tightened. No more turning
the tripod screw.
The long lens support
is attached to the L-bracket on the camera base. In
order to make this quick, I got a quick release that
attaches to the L-plate on the camera, attached to the mini
ball head. The knob on the quick release is unscrewed,
the L-plate placed in the groove, and the knob tightened.
The mini ball head is
adjustable so may be left loose until the lens has been
aimed at the subject and the tripod head locked down.
The Super Clamp at the
other end of the long lens support is attached to one of the
tripod legs. The knob that controls the brass pin that
inserts into the Super Clamp is left slightly loose until
the lens is aimed at the subject.
The adjuster that
controls the length of the long lens support is also left
loose until the lens is aimed at the subject.
Of course I needed to have a
container to store this inside. My main concern is the
telescoping tubes. One inside the other with a long
slice cut out of the side to allow the adjustment. It
looks fairly vulnerable. I would not feel good storing
it inside the tripod bag, banging up against that Tiltall.
So I went to Sears and Walmart and got a Craftsman 17-inch
Compact Truck Box #65117, and a piece of padding (Ozark
Trail Camping Pad) to line the box. Worked out
perfect.
I cut the padding to fit the box:
put one piece of padding on the floor of the box and another
on the top of the box. I used rubber cement to glue
the pads to the box.
Then I put another piece
underneath the lens support, cut to stabilize the Super
Clamp (which must be disconnected to fit inside the box).
This image shows the quick release
turned sideways to fit in the box with a cut out in the
cover that matches the quick release.
Lucky me, the tripod bag I got from my father last year was
too big for the Tiltall, but now with this box, it all fits
perfect inside.
The box with everything safely
inside.
I can handle my tripod bag as before
without worrying about the Long Lens Support getting
damaged. Total cost ~$15.00
The Manfrotto 359 Long Lens
Support is designed to provide extra support when using
long telephoto lenses. By supporting the camera base with
the legs of the tripod, this device provides better
stabilization than having the lens collar mounted to the
tripod alone.
