When I studied photography, I became
aware of the Leica and one day while browsing a record store bin with my
Pentax on my shoulder the proprietor came over to me and asked if I
wanted to buy an old camera. He showed me a Leica M3. I was
dumbfounded.
I looked at it, made mental note of the
serial number and told the man I would let him know. Back at work
I ran down the serial number and learned the camera was not reported
stolen, at least not to Leitz, so with that I decided to buy it. I
spent my entire budget for the month and the camera was mine.
In
today's terms that dollar amount would only take me a couple hours to
earn but on a students wage in 1975 it was a ton of money.
I was to learn what a wonderful piece of
precision engineering it is. Vulcanite notwithstanding, it has
been one of my favorites ever since.
