Snow Walk

Ted and I had agreed to start getting some exercise together.  We hope this will lead to our getting into better shape together.  The last two weekend activities had built-in exercise for both of us so we didn't have to make anything up.  Two weeks ago we had the Yukon Race practice, and last weekend the Yukon Race.  Fast forward to this weekend and we were all set to be fat and happy sitting at home in the warm confines of the house.

But the sun was out, the fresh snow was sparkling, and it seemed like a waste to just sit around and do "nothing".  So I invited Ted to grab his camera and join me in a walk.  In our neighborhood a "walk" generally means "mountain climb" since we live on the north slope of a steep ridge that descends on one side to the Cheat Lake, and over the other side of the ridge,  Mountainview Golf Course.  And the name is not by accident.

Ted got his Spotmatic F, Gossen Super Pilot, SMCT 1:3.5/135mm, and some (gasp!) film.  I stuffed the Vivitar 1:1.9/35mm in his bag.  I grabbed my camera-laden backpack and off we went...

We intended to take the stairs down the bluff to the lake and walk the rail trail.  But the first landing on the stairs was obliterated by a tree that fell off the bluff and took that section of stairs with it!

On the way back up the hill we took a few pictures of the woods and our home in the distance.

Next we used the strong backlighting to made some images of the cattails and ornamental grass in front of our house.

The lamp post on the corner was in just the right position to catch the sun in its lens so I stopped to make another image.

The ornamental grass that borders the road where the golf course abuts is always pretty but has challenged me to get a good image.  I made a few more attempts here.

The golf course is very pretty, and just a little strange in the off season.  Here is a rake that has been left in the sand trap for the winter...

I have found these trees to be interesting subjects so made another series of images, taking this crop out of one.

We reached the top of the ridge.  Here's Ted.  The temperature was about 15-degrees, with a moderate south wind blowing off the lake.  Chilly!

The trees on the south edge of the ridge have been interesting subjects.

This was a good time to help Ted practice holding the camera in the vertical position and to put his hands in the best positions for a steady camera.  Is that a Spotmatic F with SMCT 1:3.5/135mm I see?

The grounds of this fairway have some interesting lines that are emphasized by the snow.

On another walk along this path I could not get the right angle or light to photograph these grass bunches.  This time I think the results were a little better.  The back lighting and the low angle produces an interesting point of view...

We got to talking about a different angles and I gave Ted the Vivitar 1:1.9/35mm lens to try out.  I meanwhile stuck to the 24~105 due to the cold and the difficulty I would face trying to swap lenses with no flat surface to work from.  This spot was interesting.

We spotted this tree in the distance.  The light was flat from our angle so we walked until we got closer and were able to get at an angle to the light.  This also gave the benefit of the polarizing filter deepening the blue sky.

Here's a picture of one of the many paths that criss-cross the neighborhood and golf course.

Coming around the corner we came to this interesting repetition of shapes...

Distant Ridge

We continued our walk.  Along the way we ran into one of our good friends.  Later, back on the top of the ridge, we found the roof of a golf cart.  It was perfectly suited to be a flying saucer, if not quite so round.  It was big enough for Ted and I to go sliding down the big hill.  At the last minute Ted chickened out and I ended up flying down the hill way too fast for an old fat man with a whole much of cameras!  My glasses jumped out of my pocket and landed on the hill, to be retrieved later when I discovered them missing at home...

A nice little walk!
